CMF Pheasant Tail B-Grade

CMF Pheasant Tail B-Grade feathers are a staple fly tying material primarily used to imitate nymph bodies, tails, and legs on various nymph patterns, including the famous Pheasant Tail Nymph. They are also used for wing cases on nymphs, and some hunters and tiers use the fibers for other applications, such as creating durable hopper wings.

Uses and applications

  • Nymph bodies and tails:The fibers from pheasant tail feathers are excellent for creating life-like nymph bodies and tails, particularly for mimicking mayfly and stonefly nymphs.
  • Nymph legs and wing cases:The individual barbs of pheasant feathers can be used to create legs on nymphs, while the feather itself can be folded to form a wing case for a nymph.
  • Other applications:
    • Hopper wings:Sections of pheasant tail feathers can be trimmed and folded to form durable wings on hopper patterns.
    • Emerger wings:The fibers are also used to create soft hackles for emergers.
    • Streamer collars:The feathers can also be tied in to form collars on streamer flies.

Why pheasant tail feathers are so useful

  • Versatility:A single pheasant skin can provide a wide range of materials for different parts of a fly.
  • Life-like imitation:The iridescent olive-brown color and contrasting colors of the fibers create a highly realistic imitation of nymphs.
  • Durability:The stiff fibers are easy to secure to the hook and can add durability to the fly.
  • Stiffness and Floatation:Fibers from the pheasant rump feather can provide enough stiffness to increase floatation when used for surface flies.
