Dumbbells add weight to a fly, helping it reach the lower levels of the water column more quickly.
The weight of the dumbbell eyes causes the fly to ride hook-upward and imparts a lively, jigging motion when retrieved.
The “real” eyes in these dumbbells, often with a pupil, give the fly a more realistic and enticing look to fish.
Start by wrapping your tying thread on the hook shank where you want the eyes to sit.
Place the dumbbell eyes on top of the hook shank and make several “X”-shaped cross-wraps around them to hold them in place.
Wrap the thread underneath the hook shank and then back over the top of the eyes, pulling tightly to “frap” the previous wraps. This pulls the wraps together, creating a secure bridge that locks the eyes down.
Apply a layer of super glue to the thread wraps and around the base of the eyes to further secure them and prevent them from moving or twisting on the hook shank.
