CMF Turkey Marabou Black is a popular and versatile fly-tying material known for its exceptional movement and pulsating action in water, used in streamer flies, nymphs, and other lures for a wide range of fish species. It is harvested from turkeys, not marabou storks, and comes in various forms, such as strung feathers, bloods, and individual fibers, which are used for tails, bodies, and wings. Tyers prepare the marabou by stripping fibers from the stem, washing it to remove excess dye, and drying it with heat to enhance fluffiness and flow.
You can make a tail section with one colour or with two or even three colours by taking a bit of the fibers and pinching them together and tying it to your hook, the Marabou gives movement to the fly and pulsate in the water when you retrieve the Fly. Tale a pit of superglue on the shank of the hook before you ty the marabou down that will make your fly stronger.
Uses in Fly Tying
Marabou’s soft, fluffy fibers create a lifelike and attractive appearance for fly tails and wings, giving a striking silhouette that attracts fish.
The material can be wrapped or sewn to form the body of nymph patterns, providing a natural, undulating look.
Individual fibers can be used to create delicate trailing shucks on flies.
Stripped marabou fibers are excellent for tying small, mobile nymphs that mimic aquatic insects.
A pinch of marabou is commonly used to create the tail of the classic Woolly Bugger streamer.
